Interlaken

Country: Switzerland Updated:

Interlaken works as a base for combining a town walk, a lake and a separate mountain day. Leave room to rearrange days around the weather, with a separate outing for each mountain destination. If your wider itinerary allows, begin with three nights; for two days, one lake and one mountain destination are enough. Distinguish Interlaken, neighbouring Unterseen and lakeside villages when choosing a base. They complement each other, but a regional name in a hotel description does not explain your daily departure point. Start with the station you need and the last suitable journey back.

When to go

For shoreline walks and mountain railways, use each line's published operating season rather than the word “summer” alone. Shoulder seasons suit a more flexible itinerary with an alternative in town. An operating railway does not guarantee a view, and weather outside the hotel does not describe conditions higher up.

As reviewed on 2 November 2026, the published Harder Kulm season ends on 29 November; the Schynige Platte railway season already ended on 25 October. Recheck these dates before travelling. A closed railway should not automatically be replaced with a walk up the mountain.

Things to see and do

Start day one at Höhematte, follow Höheweg and continue towards the Aare. Extend the walk into Unterseen's old town, pausing at Stadthausplatz. This helps establish your bearings before a larger excursion. Art enthusiasts can check Kunsthaus Interlaken's exhibition and opening days, then choose a suitable time to visit.

Choose one lake for day two. Bönigen, beside Lake Brienz, offers wooden houses and a waterfront walk for a shorter outing. Alternatively, choose a boat service with an intended stop and a return journey already checked. The landing by Interlaken West serves Lake Thun; the one by Interlaken Ost serves Lake Brienz. Timetables and seasons differ.

Keep day three for one mountain excursion. Harder Kulm's viewpoint is reached by funicular from its own lower station near Ost. Jungfraujoch involves a longer journey with connections: check the chosen route and reservation requirements. Choose one of these outings, allowing time for pauses and the return journey.

Practical tips

Before a mountain outing, compare the forecast, webcam and operating information. Save the last suitable descent and an alternative connection home. Choose an extra clothing layer and footwear for the altitude and surface, even if conditions in town feel comfortable. Keep to open, marked walking routes that match your experience.

Participating accommodation provides a guest card covering local transport only within its validity area, alongside individual discounts. It does not mean every summit is free. List your actual journeys and compare supplements before buying another pass. For boats, check the precise stop, direction and travel date, including the return trip.

Getting there and getting around

Select the correct station on your ticket: Interlaken Ost and West are separate places. Ost is the departure point towards Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. For an airport arrival, compare the complete rail journey rather than assuming every flight time involves the same connections.

At the review date, the West–Ost railway is closed from 19 October through 11 December 2026, with replacement buses. The tourist office warns of changed stops at West. Use the updated journey planner and signs on site, allowing extra time before a reserved onward mountain service.

Where to stay

For frequent Jungfrau-region excursions, we would first compare accommodation near Ost. If walks and dinners in Unterseen are the priority, consider the western side and check the actual walk from West. Höheweg offers possibilities between the stations, but the precise address and room orientation matter more than a broad location description.

Bönigen is worth considering if you intend to spend more time by the lake. Check the evening bus, luggage route and guest-card arrangements before booking. A more distant room is not necessarily better value once daily transfers are included. Practical luggage storage and clear early-departure arrangements help during an active stay.

What to try

Look for regional Alpine cheeses, fondue and raclette. Autumn menus may include game with seasonal accompaniments. Ask the restaurant about its seasonal menu, ingredients and provenance.

After a long excursion, we would eat near the accommodation rather than commit to another transfer. With a substantial cheese dish, ask about portion size and minimum numbers ordering. Discuss recipes with staff if you avoid alcohol or particular ingredients. When buying food for the following day, consider how you will store and carry it.
