El Jem
El Jem stands on the site of ancient Thysdrus in Tunisia. Its most important structure is the Roman amphitheatre from the 3rd century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When to go
Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for the open-air monuments. Come early in summer: the amphitheatre has little shade, and the stone becomes very hot.
Things to see and do
Visit the arena, galleries and whichever parts of the amphitheatre are accessible. Complete your visit with El Jem Museum, its Roman mosaics and the adjoining remains of houses.
Practical tips
Wear sturdy shoes for steps and uneven stone. Check opening hours and what the ticket includes in advance; do not enter closed or cordoned-off areas.
Getting there and getting around
El Jem is accessible by road from Sousse, Mahdia or Sfax. On a day trip, arrange the return transfer as well and leave time for the museum.
Where to stay
Many visitors come on day trips from the coast. If staying locally, confirm accommodation early; Sousse, Mahdia and Sfax offer more choice.
What to try
For lunch, small restaurants serving Tunisian dishes such as brik, couscous or grilled meat are an option. Ask about the day’s menu and prices before ordering.
