Destination
Douz
Douz is an oasis town in southern Tunisia on the edge of the sandy Sahara. Palm groves and dunes make it a starting point for desert experiences and the region's traditions.
When to go
Autumn, winter and spring are more comfortable for desert excursions. Daytime heat can be intense in summer; warm clothing is needed for overnight stays in the cooler season.
Things to see and do
Choose a short dune walk with a local guide or an overnight stay in an organised camp. Plan a trip to the Chott el Djerid salt lake separately and stop only in suitable places.
Practical tips
Clarify the route, vehicle, water supply and camp facilities in advance. Do not leave the road independently at the salt lake: a surface that looks dry does not mean the ground can support weight.
Getting there and getting around
Douz can be reached by road via Kébili, for example from Tozeur. Arrange longer desert routes with a local operator instead of driving independently through the dunes.
Where to stay
A hotel in Douz is suitable for short excursions. Ask camps about sanitation, bedding, meals and the transfer time from town.
What to try
Try dates, couscous with lamb and desert bread baked in hot sand beneath embers. This kind of evening meal can be arranged with the camp in advance.
