When to go

Spring and autumn are suitable for walking tours. Visit open squares in the morning if possible in summer: the interior can become especially hot.

Things to see and do

Visit the accessible areas of the Great Mosque, the Aghlabid Basins and the Sidi Sahbi complex. Also allow time for the medina's lanes and traditional carpet shops.

Practical tips

Wear clothing that provides coverage at religious sites and follow staff instructions. Access to individual rooms depends on the relevant rules and prayer times; ask beforehand.

Getting there and getting around

Travel is by road, for example from Sousse, Monastir or Tunis. The old town can be explored on foot; arrange trips to more distant places and your return journey in advance.

Where to stay

A guesthouse in the medina is suitable for a quiet city stay. With a car, a hotel outside may be more convenient; check parking and the walk into the centre.

What to try

Try makroud, a semolina pastry with a date filling. For a larger meal, couscous or lamb dishes are options; ask how spicy they are when ordering.
