When to go

The drier months are particularly good for temple visits and walks. As it is warm all year, visit exposed sights in the morning.

Things to see and do

Visit the Kraton, Malioboro Street and markets, and plan separate excursions to Borobudur and Prambanan.

Practical tips

Visit temples in the morning where possible because of the heat and visitor numbers. For trips outside the city, check transport and current visiting rules in advance.

Getting there and getting around

The region is served by Yogyakarta International Airport. The city is also connected by rail to Jakarta, Surabaya and other cities on Java.

Where to stay

The area around Malioboro Street is convenient for a first visit and transport. Prawirotaman offers cafés, smaller hotels and a quieter atmosphere.

What to try

Try gudeg, sate klathak, bakpia and Javanese dishes.
