Destination
Taroudant
Taroudant lies in the Souss Valley in southern Morocco. Long ochre walls enclose the old quarters; behind the gates are markets, craft shops and the medina's residential lanes.
When to go
Spring and autumn are good for longer walks. In summer, move sightseeing to the morning or evening and use the hot midday hours for a break.
Things to see and do
Follow a section of the town walls, discover the gates and visit the souks. Craft shops offer leather goods, metalwork and other regional products.
Practical tips
Agree on prices for purchases and services in advance. Ask permission before photographing people and workshops; an offline map makes navigation easier.
Getting there and getting around
Arriving by road from Agadir is practical. Explore the medina on foot; arrange a taxi or transfer for excursions outside the old town.
Where to stay
A riad within the walls is a good base for the medina. With a car, accommodation outside the centre may be more practical; check parking and distance to the gates.
What to try
Try tagine, couscous and amlou, a spread of almonds, argan oil and honey common in southern Morocco. Ask locally when particular dishes are offered.
