Destination
Ifrane
Ifrane lies in the Middle Atlas and is known for houses with steep roofs, parks and nearby cedar forests. Its cool mountain climate and winter snow make the city distinctly different from Morocco's coastal towns.
When to go
Late spring through autumn is suitable for walks in the city and surrounding area. Snow may fall in winter; check road conditions and accessible walking routes before travelling.
Things to see and do
Visit the stone lion in the centre and the city's parks. Plan a separate excursion to the cedar forests in Ifrane National Park.
Practical tips
Pack a warm layer even for summer evenings. Do not feed the Barbary macaques or leave food exposed; watch the animals from a distance.
Getting there and getting around
Ifrane is reachable by road from Fez, Meknes or Azrou. A car or an organised excursion is convenient for forest areas; the centre can be explored on foot.
Where to stay
A central hotel is suitable for a short stay. Guesthouses and accommodation outside the city are also options for Middle Atlas trips; clarify heating and access in winter.
What to try
Menus include dishes such as tagine, couscous, harira and Moroccan tea. Before early excursions, check breakfast times or take food with you.
