Destination
Seoul
Seoul is South Korea's capital and a modern metropolis where historic palaces and traditional neighbourhoods meet skyscrapers, shopping districts and well-developed infrastructure. The city is also known for its food, culture and areas along the Han River.
When to go
Spring and autumn are particularly good for walking because of the milder weather. Summer can be hot and humid, and the rainy season may affect plans. Winter is cold, but clear days are good for museums, palaces and sightseeing.
Things to see and do
Visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, walk through the traditional Bukchon neighbourhood and Insadong. Also allow time for modern districts such as Myeongdong, Hongdae or Gangnam, visit an observation deck and stroll along the Cheonggyecheon or Han River.
Practical tips
Public transport covers large parts of the city, so the metro is often the easiest option. Check opening hours in advance for palaces, museums and events. Popular districts can be very busy, especially in the evening.
Getting there and getting around
Most international flights arrive at Incheon Airport, while some services use Gimpo Airport. Reach the centre by train, bus or taxi. The city has an extensive metro and bus network.
Where to stay
Myeongdong is practical for a first visit because of its central location, shops and transport connections. Hongdae suits cafés, music and nightlife. Insadong and Jongno are convenient for historic palaces and traditional areas.
What to try
Try Korean barbecue, bibimbap, tteokbokki and dishes with kimchi. Traditional markets and small restaurants also offer a wide range of noodles, soups, snacks and street food.
