Ngorongoro Crater

Country: Tanzania Updated:

Ngorongoro Crater is a large volcanic caldera in northern Tanzania. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Grasslands, bodies of water and woodland alternate across the crater floor, where wildlife can be observed.

When to go

Dry weather usually makes driving easier, while rain turns the landscape greener. The high crater rim is cooler than the floor; warm clothing is needed for early drives.

Things to see and do

The main activity is a game drive on the crater floor, with stops where permitted. Add a view from the rim; plan Olduvai Gorge as a separate stage of the journey.

Practical tips

Clarify entrance payments, conditions for the crater descent and guiding services beforehand. Do not feed animals, leave vehicles only where permitted and keep food away from birds and monkeys.

Getting there and getting around

Arusha is a usual starting point; the road route goes through Karatu to the conservation area. Organise the crater descent with a suitable safari vehicle and an experienced driver-guide.

Where to stay

Lodges on the crater rim suit early drives, while Karatu offers accommodation outside the conservation area. When comparing prices, take fees, meals and time to the entrance into account.

What to try

The lodge or safari operator usually provides meals. Try Tanzanian dishes with rice, ugali and vegetables; order a packed lunch in advance for long drives.
