When to go

Rainfall, temperature and trail conditions are particularly important for an ascent. High-mountain weather can change rapidly at any time of year.

Things to see and do

Choose a suitable route with a licensed operator, gain altitude gradually and discover the national park's vegetation zones.

Practical tips

Altitude places considerable strain on the body. Acclimatise slowly, follow your guides' instructions and check the national park's requirements in advance.

Getting there and getting around

The region's main airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport. From there, visitors travel to Moshi or Arusha and onward to the route starting points.

Where to stay

Moshi is a popular base for ascents. Official camps or huts are used on the mountain depending on the chosen route.

What to try

Before and after the trip, try ugali, nyama choma, stews, banana dishes and other specialities of northern Tanzania.
