Destination
New York
New York is the largest city in the United States and one of the world's best-known destinations. Manhattan's skyscrapers, museums, theatres, large parks and the diverse neighbourhoods of the five boroughs shape its intense city life.
When to go
Spring and autumn are particularly good for long city walks. Summer can become hot and humid, but many outdoor events take place. Winter is colder, while the holiday season brings a special atmosphere.
Things to see and do
Visit Central Park, Times Square, Lower Manhattan and the waterfront areas. Allow time for the Metropolitan Museum of Art or another major museum, visit an observation deck and walk across Brooklyn Bridge.
Practical tips
Plan your route by neighbourhood, as distances between sights can be large. For popular museums, observation decks and shows, check times and reservation terms on official websites in advance.
Getting there and getting around
New York is served by JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports. The subway, buses and commuter trains are suitable for getting around the city. Many journeys in central neighbourhoods are also easily made on foot.
Where to stay
Midtown is convenient for a first trip because of its central location and good transport links. Lower Manhattan suits walks through the historic part of the city. Brooklyn neighbourhoods reveal another side of New York.
What to try
Try New York pizza, a filled bagel and a classic deli sandwich. The different neighbourhoods also offer cuisines from almost every part of the world.
