Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is an immense gorge of the Colorado River in Arizona, known for its colourful rock layers, vast panoramas and numerous viewpoints.
When to go
Spring and autumn are usually more pleasant for hiking. The canyon’s interior can be extremely hot in summer, while snow and ice are possible along the rims in winter.
Things to see and do
Visit viewpoints on the South Rim, explore Desert View Drive, walk the Rim Trail and undertake more demanding routes with appropriate preparation.
Practical tips
Do not underestimate the altitude and heat. Bring enough water and do not plan a descent into the canyon without preparation and an understanding of the return route.
Getting there and getting around
The South Rim is accessible by roads in Arizona and is open throughout the year. Major transport hubs are in Flagstaff, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
Where to stay
Accommodation is available in Grand Canyon Village, Tusayan and other places in the region.
What to try
The park area has restaurants and cafés serving American cuisine; nearby towns offer a wider choice.
