When to go

The drier months are better for boat trips and sightseeing. Because of the altitude, nights remain cold even when daytime weather is sunny.

Things to see and do

Take boat trips to the lake's islands and communities, visit the floating Uros Islands and discover the traditional culture of the Puno region.

Practical tips

The lake lies above 3,800 metres, so account for the altitude and increase exertion gradually. Bring warm clothing and sun protection.

Getting there and getting around

The main base on the Peruvian side is Puno. Road and rail connections link the region with other cities in southern Peru.

Where to stay

Puno has a wide choice of hotels; smaller family-run accommodation is available on some islands and in communities.

What to try

Try trout, quinoa, potatoes, soups and traditional Andean highland dishes.
