Country: Türkiye Updated:

Istanbul is Türkiye's largest city and stretches across both sides of the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia. Historic mosques and palaces, lively markets, waterfront promenades and modern districts create a particularly varied urban atmosphere.

When to go

Spring and autumn are particularly good for walks and sightseeing in historic districts. Summer can be hot and crowded, but its long days are ideal for trips on the Bosphorus. Winter is cooler and more often rainy, usually with fewer visitors around.

Things to see and do

Visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, and walk through the Grand Bazaar and the Sultanahmet district. Also plan a Bosphorus trip and time for Galata, Karaköy and Kadıköy.

Practical tips

Check opening hours and visiting rules for popular attractions on official websites in advance. Observe dress rules and prayer times at active mosques. City ferries are especially convenient between the European and Asian sides.

Getting there and getting around

The main international flights arrive at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport. The metro, trams, buses and ferries are convenient within the city. Many sights in the historic centre are within walking distance.

Where to stay

Sultanahmet is convenient for a first trip and proximity to the main historic sights. Beyoğlu and Karaköy suit travellers who value restaurants, cafés and nightlife. Kadıköy on the Asian side offers a more local atmosphere and good ferry connections.

What to try

Try simit, kebab, mezze and a Turkish breakfast, along with fish dishes in Bosphorus neighbourhoods. For something sweet, choose baklava or lokum. Turkish tea and coffee are found almost everywhere.
