Coiba National Park

Country: Panama Updated:

Coiba National Park protects the large island of Coiba, numerous smaller islands and the surrounding marine areas in the Gulf of Chiriquí. Isolation encouraged endemic species, while the marine zone forms an important ecological link for fish, turtles and marine mammals of the tropical eastern Pacific.

When to go

Boat trips are easier to plan in drier weather and calm seas, but wind, heavy rain and waves can change the programme in any season. Keep a spare day free and clarify cancellation terms.

Things to see and do

Choose a licensed operator for boat tours, snorkelling, nature observation or diving in authorised areas. Follow ranger instructions and do not expect guaranteed sightings of particular animals.

Practical tips

The park is far from major medical facilities and reliable mobile coverage. Check permits, the boat's condition, life jackets, water, communications and the emergency plan; diving requires suitable insurance and proven qualifications. Do not touch coral or feed animals.

Getting there and getting around

Tours are usually organised from the Pacific coast, often through the Santa Catalina area, and only with an operator who has made advance arrangements. Confirm the boarding point, departure time, crossing duration and return before dark.

Where to stay

Santa Catalina and other coastal settlements confirmed by the operator are practical starting points. Book accommodation and the boat together, as bad weather may require an extra night.

What to try

Try ceviche, fresh fish, coconut rice, patacones, seafood and tropical fruit.
