When to go

The dry monsoon from January to March generally brings calmer weather, but sea conditions and visibility vary throughout the year. Seasonal gatherings of manta rays depend on plankton, tides and protected-area rules and are not guaranteed.

Things to see and do

Choose a licensed operator for snorkelling, diving or boat trips, observe permit requirements in Hanifaru Bay, and visit inhabited islands or mangrove areas. Do not touch the reef or pursue animals.

Practical tips

Strong tidal currents can pull swimmers away from shore; swim only in designated areas and follow staff instructions. Check life jackets, keep away from propellers, take no coral and observe clothing and alcohol rules on inhabited islands.

Getting there and getting around

Depending on the island, Baa Atoll can be reached from Malé by domestic flight, seaplane or speedboat. Confirm every transfer leg, baggage limits and waiting times with your accommodation.

Where to stay

Choose between resort islands and guesthouses on inhabited islands. Clarify medical assistance, environmental fees, meals, alcohol rules and arrangements if the boat transfer is cancelled.

What to try

Try mas huni with roshi, garudhiya, tuna curry, grilled fish, coconut snacks and seasonal fruit.
