When to go

May to October is generally drier and cooler, although trade winds can increase wave heights. The cyclone season lasts from 1 November to 30 April; flexible tickets and a safety plan are particularly important during this period.

Things to see and do

Take a lagoon trip to One Foot Island, Maina or Akaiami, snorkel only in permitted areas and learn about the island's history on a cultural tour. The main island is easy to explore by bicycle or scooter.

Practical tips

Choose a boat with life jackets and working communications, follow local advice on currents and do not step on coral. Wear a helmet on a scooter, do not leave valuables unattended, drink bottled or boiled water and obtain insurance covering medical evacuation to New Zealand.

Getting there and getting around

The domestic flight from Rarotonga to Aitutaki takes about 50 minutes. Confirm baggage limits, the transfer from the small airport and the connection to your international flight, especially if the connection time is short.

Where to stay

The main island has guesthouses, family-run hotels, villas and resorts. Check drinking water, backup power, transfers to the jetty and cancellation terms during cyclone season.

What to try

Try ika mata, grilled fish, rukau, taro, coconut dishes, tropical fruit and food cooked in an umu earth oven.
