Vianden Castle
Vianden Castle rises above the Our Valley and the town of the same name in northern Luxembourg. The complex combines Romanesque and Gothic building phases with restored halls, a chapel, galleries and fortifications.
When to go
Spring and autumn suit a quieter visit; summer usually has longer opening hours, but also more groups and events. In winter, the castle closes earlier, so check the calendar and last admission.
Things to see and do
Follow the official route through the courtyard, chapel, ceremonial halls and defensive areas, use the audio guide, and allow time for the old town and riverside. The chairlift above the valley operates seasonally.
Practical tips
The castle has many stairs, uneven stone surfaces and steep approaches; sturdy shoes are useful, and not all areas are accessible without steps. Keep documents and valuables close to you on buses and at sights.
Getting there and getting around
Vianden is usually reached by public transport via Ettelbruck or by car from Luxembourg City. As parking at the castle is limited, check bus timetables, the walking route and your return journey in advance.
Where to stay
Stay in Vianden to experience the valley in the evening, or use Ettelbruck or Luxembourg City as a transport base. Book early during festivals.
What to try
Try judd mat gaardebounen, gromperekichelcher, regional trout and Luxembourgish pastries.
