Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
The Vatican Museums bring together papal collections of archaeology, classical sculpture, painting, maps, tapestries and art from many cultures. The main route passes through numerous galleries and halls to the Sistine Chapel, with frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. The museum ticket also includes the Sistine Chapel on its valid date.
When to go
Book an official time slot in advance and arrive in good time for security checks. According to the published schedule, the museums are usually open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00, with last admission at 18:00; the last Sunday has a separate morning schedule. Always check closures and changes on the official website.
Things to see and do
Allow several hours for the antiquities collections, Pinacoteca, Tapestry and Map Galleries, Raphael Rooms and Sistine Chapel. The long route is largely prescribed; set priorities and use the official map or audio guide. Do not touch objects or block passageways, and remain quiet in sacred spaces.
Practical tips
Buy tickets only through the official portal; similarly named websites may charge inflated prices. Clothing must cover shoulders and knees; hats, large bags, tripods, video cameras, knives and certain other items must be left in the free cloakroom. Bring identification, comfortable shoes and water, but do not eat or drink in exhibition halls.
Getting there and getting around
The museum entrance is on Viale Vaticano, not Saint Peter's Square. Metro line A at Ottaviano or Cipro, buses and official taxis are suitable. Allow time for security and ticket checks. Do not follow street vendors offering supposed fast-track access, and check the address and booking only through official museum information.
Where to stay
Prati, Borgo or accommodation on metro line A are convenient for reaching early time slots without complicated changes. Check city tax, a lift, air conditioning, luggage storage and reception hours. Large luggage does not belong on the museum route, and cloakroom items must be collected before closing.
What to try
Around the Vatican and Rome, you can find pizza al taglio, pasta, supplì, vegetable dishes, gelato and coffee. Do not plan a full meal along the exhibition route; use designated rest areas and cafés or eat beforehand. In tourist areas, compare menus and prices, and watch your valuables in queues.
