Vallée de Mai
Vallée de Mai is a protected palm forest in the interior of Praslin Island, preserving many features of an ancient natural ecosystem of the Seychelles. The endemic coco de mer palm, which has the largest seed in the plant world, grows here alongside other rare palms and island species.
When to go
The reserve can be visited all year, but after heavy rain, the paths become wet and slippery. Early mornings are usually cooler and quieter for walking and birdwatching.
Things to see and do
Choose one of the marked forest trails, learn about the endemic palm species and, if possible, join a tour with a nature guide. Black parrots and other animals may be observed, but sightings are not guaranteed.
Practical tips
Do not collect seeds, leaves or other natural materials, and do not leave official trails. Wear shoes with good grip, protect yourself from rain and insects, and do not leave valuables in a parked car.
Getting there and getting around
Vallée de Mai is on Praslin. From Mahé, take a domestic flight or ferry to Praslin, then continue by bus, taxi or hire car. Confirm sea conditions and timetables beforehand.
Where to stay
Praslin has small hotels, guesthouses and resorts along different stretches of coast. Choose accommodation according to its distance from the reserve, ferry terminal and beaches.
What to try
Try fish or octopus curry, breadfruit, coconut dishes, chutneys and fresh regional fish.
