Ulu Temburong National Park

Country: Brunei Updated:

Ulu Temburong protects a large rainforest area in Brunei's eastern exclave. River valleys, lowland and mountain forests, abundant wildlife and a high forest canopy make the park the country's main nature destination.

When to go

Tropical rain is possible all year; early mornings are usually cooler and better for observing nature. Heavy rain and water levels can alter the boat route and trails, so allow some spare time.

Things to see and do

Visit the park with a recognised operator; the programme may include a river trip, a climb to the canopy tower, a short walk and a waterfall. Sightings of particular animals are not guaranteed.

Practical tips

Do not enter the forest alone, stay on trails, wear closed shoes, and carry water, a torch, waterproofs and insect protection. Insist on a life jacket on boats, avoid the water's edge because of crocodiles, and keep your distance from snakes.

Getting there and getting around

From Bandar Seri Begawan, first cross the bridge into Temburong District, then continue by organised transfer and boat. Do not plan independent access without an operator, permits and a confirmed return journey.

Where to stay

You can choose an ecolodge in Temburong or stay in Bandar Seri Begawan and book a day tour. Clarify whether transfers, meals, a guide, permits and rescue equipment are included.

What to try

Try ambuyat, nasi katok, grilled fish, sago dishes, regional vegetables and sweet kuih.
