Tumon Bay
Tumon Bay is Guam's main holiday area, with a long white beach and a shallow lagoon protected by an outer coral reef. Parts of the water form a marine protected area with numerous species of coral and reef fish. Along the shore are Ypao and Matapang Beach Parks, hotels, restaurants and promenade areas.
When to go
January to May is usually drier and sunnier, although tropical showers are possible all year. June to December is wetter, and typhoons can affect flights and beach operations. A morning with little wind is suitable for snorkelling, after checking the marine forecast.
Things to see and do
Start at Ypao Beach Park, where access to the lagoon is convenient and reef fish can be observed in calm water. Walk along Tumon Beach, watch the sunset at Gun Beach and visit the Two Lovers Point viewpoint. In the evening, Tumon Night Market is worth visiting if it takes place during your trip.
Practical tips
Before swimming, check National Weather Service warnings for high surf and rip currents. Do not step on coral, wear suitable shoes in shallow water and use reef-friendly sunscreen. During typhoon season, follow the authorities' instructions, keep water and medicines ready, and stay away from the sea when warnings are issued.
Getting there and getting around
The journey from Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport to Tumon usually takes 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, transfer or car. Tourist trolleys and local buses run between hotels, shopping centres and attractions; a car is more practical for trips around the whole island.
Where to stay
Central Tumon is convenient for restaurants, shopping and evening walks. The south near Ypao Beach is quieter and good for snorkelling; the north near Gun Beach suits sunsets and viewpoints. During typhoon season, check shelter options and cancellation policies.
What to try
Try CHamoru barbecue, red rice, chicken kelaguen, finadene sauce, lumpia, coconut dishes and the dessert latiya.
