Tsavo National Park

Country: Kenya Updated:

Tsavo is a vast natural region in southeastern Kenya with two national parks: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The east is known for wide plains and red-dusted elephants, while the west has lava landscapes and springs.

When to go

Drier weather usually makes driving on tracks easier. Choose your travel dates to suit the route and camp location; after rain, ask whether individual sections are passable.

Things to see and do

In Tsavo East, safaris cross the plains and follow the Galana River. In Tsavo West, Mzima Springs and lava landscapes are attractions; allow separate transfer times for the two parks.

Practical tips

Clarify which park is actually included and which fees have been paid. Do not plan to see all of Tsavo on a short excursion; follow the rules on stopping and getting out of vehicles.

Getting there and getting around

Important access roads lie along the Nairobi–Mombasa route, but the appropriate gate depends on the park section. Agree on the meeting point and driving time to the lodge with your operator.

Where to stay

Lodges and camps are spread across different park areas and the surrounding region. Choose accommodation according to the safari route and access, rather than the Tsavo name alone.

What to try

For remote camps, book meals as part of your stay where possible. Ask about Kenyan dishes such as stew, vegetables and ugali; order a packed lunch in advance for long game drives.
