Destination
Tikal National Park
Tikal is a major Maya archaeological complex in the forests of northern Guatemala. Temples, palaces, plazas, roads, reservoirs and residential areas of the ancient city stand among tropical vegetation.
When to go
Arrive early in the morning, when it is cooler and less crowded. Paths can be wet during the rainy season; heat and high humidity make plenty of water essential.
Things to see and do
Visit the Great Plaza, temple complexes, palaces and ancient causeways. A knowledgeable guide explains the history and helps you spot birds, monkeys and other forest animals.
Practical tips
Do not climb closed structures or leave official paths. In the department of Petén, use a reliable operator, travel during daylight whenever possible and follow local safety advice.
Getting there and getting around
Flores and Santa Elena are the main starting points. Reach the park by tourist shuttle, tour or car; the nearest airport is near Flores.
Where to stay
Stay in Flores, El Remate or accommodation near the park entrance. For an early visit, reserve your transfer in advance.
What to try
Try pepián, kak'ik, tamales, corn tortillas, black beans and dishes with regional spices.
