Te Anau
Te Anau is a small town beside the South Island's largest lake and the main tourism centre for trips to Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound.
When to go
The region can be visited all year, but the weather in Fiordland is very changeable. The Great Walks are particularly popular in summer, while winter is quieter and cooler.
Things to see and do
Walk along Lake Te Anau, visit the glowworm caves, take a boat trip, explore the Kepler Track and use the town as a base for Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound.
Practical tips
Always carry waterproofs and a warm layer. During the summer high season, accommodation and popular walks should be booked early.
Getting there and getting around
Te Anau is connected by road to Queenstown, Invercargill and Dunedin. The main route along the Milford Road starts here.
Where to stay
The town has motels, hotels, holiday parks, hostels and lodges in various categories.
