Taipei 101

Country: Taiwan Updated:

Taipei 101 is Taipei's best-known skyscraper landmark; its tiered form recalls segments of bamboo. The 89th floor has a panoramic observation deck at a height of 382 metres, overlooking the Taipei Basin. Visitors can also see the large tuned mass damper, learn about the earthquake-resistant design and ride up in a high-speed lift.

When to go

The observation deck is open throughout the year, but the clearest views often follow the passage of a rain front. Mornings are usually quieter; before sunset, you can experience the city as its lights change. The outdoor Skyline460 area depends on the weather and may be cancelled; check opening hours and current notices before visiting.

Things to see and do

Go to the indoor observation deck on the 89th floor, see the tuned mass damper on the 88th floor, and reserve Skyline460 or an upper-level area when the weather is suitable. Afterwards, explore Xinyi, City Hall Square and the shopping centre. For the classic external panorama of Taipei 101, climb the steps on Elephant Mountain towards evening.

Practical tips

Buy a timed entry slot in advance and allow time for security checks. Visibility depends on clouds, rain and haze; views extend less far in poor weather. Skyline460 has requirements for height, footwear and safety equipment. Evenings and public holidays are particularly crowded; tripods and large luggage may be restricted.

Getting there and getting around

The easiest route is the red MRT line to Taipei 101/World Trade Center, whose exits lead directly into the skyscraper district. From other parts of the city, transfers at Taipei Main Station or Da'an are practical. Taxis and buses are also available, but road traffic in Xinyi is slow at peak times.

Where to stay

Xinyi is practical for modern architecture, shopping centres and evening views but usually more expensive. Da'an offers cafés, parks and good MRT connections. Zhongshan and the area around Taipei Main Station suit travellers planning quick connections and trips around the city or island.

What to try

Nearby, you will find xiaolongbao, beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, gua bao and bubble tea. For a wider choice, visit a night market in the evening. The complex itself has a food court, cafés, restaurants and shops selling Taiwanese pastries and tea.
