When to go

Spring and autumn are particularly good for walks and city excursions. Summer is warm and good for beaches and outdoor activities, although popular places may be busier. Winter is cooler, but many city sights and museums remain easy to visit.

Things to see and do

Visit the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay, walk through The Rocks and along the harbour, and enjoy views of the Harbour Bridge. Also allow time for the Royal Botanic Garden and Bondi Beach, with the option of the Bondi to Coogee Walk or a ferry ride.

Practical tips

Distances between beaches, the centre and outer neighbourhoods can be large, so plan routes by area. Check tickets and times early for popular tours and events. Use sun protection outdoors.

Getting there and getting around

International flights arrive at Sydney Airport. Reach the centre by train, bus or taxi. The city has trains, buses, light rail and ferries. Harbour journeys often combine transport with beautiful views.

Where to stay

The CBD is practical for a first visit because of its proximity to Circular Quay, museums and transport. The Rocks suits historic harbour atmosphere. Darling Harbour is appealing for families, while neighbourhoods closer to Bondi are attractive for beach access.

What to try

Try fresh seafood, Australian fish, modern multicultural cuisine and classic café brunches. Sydney's international population makes it easy to find Asian, Mediterranean and many other cuisines.
