When to go

The main visiting season is usually during the warmer months. Check opening hours and accessible areas beforehand, as the exposed hill may experience strong winds, rain and rapid cooling.

Things to see and do

Visit the lower and upper courtyards, defensive walls, towers and open museum rooms. Combine the visit with Spišské Podhradie, Spišská Kapitula, Žehra or the historic town of Levoča.

Practical tips

The tour crosses steep and uneven stone surfaces, so shoes with good grip are necessary. Do not go beyond barriers, and be prepared for rapid weather changes in Slovakia.

Getting there and getting around

The castle is usually reached via Spišské Podhradie by car or regional public transport from Poprad, Levoča or Košice. From the car park or stop, continue uphill on foot.

Where to stay

Levoča, Poprad and Spišské Podhradie are practical bases. At least one overnight stay is worthwhile for visiting several sights in the region.

What to try

Try bryndzové halušky, pierogi filled with cheese or potatoes, cabbage soup, sheep's cheese and regional pastries.
