Destination
South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park is one of Zambia's best-known safari areas, beside the Luangwa River, with diverse wildlife, lagoons and savannah landscapes.
When to go
The dry season is usually particularly good for wildlife watching along the river and at waterholes. The landscape turns green in the rainy season, but some tracks may be harder to drive.
Things to see and do
Take a vehicle or walking safari with an experienced guide, watch animals along the Luangwa River and discover the park's varied landscapes.
Practical tips
On walking safaris, follow professional guides' instructions closely. In remote areas, plan transport, communications and supplies in advance.
Getting there and getting around
The main tourist gateway is Mfuwe, accessible by domestic flight from Lusaka. Transfers to lodges and park entrances are arranged from there.
Where to stay
The area around Mfuwe and within the safari zones has lodges, tented camps and smaller safari camps in different categories.
What to try
Lodges offer Zambian and international dishes, including nshima, vegetable sides, meat and fish.
