Soufrière Hills Volcano
Soufrière Hills is an active complex volcano in southern Montserrat, whose current eruptive phase began in 1995. Pyroclastic flows and ash destroyed large parts of Plymouth and turned the southern areas of the island into an exclusion zone. Today the volcano is continuously monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory; visitors may experience the transformed landscape only from authorised viewpoints or with certified guides.
When to go
December to April is usually drier, with a better chance of a cloud-free summit. Humidity and brief showers are possible throughout the year; tropical-storm risk increases from June to November. Check MVO and DMCA reports before your excursion, as hazard levels, viewpoints and access rules may change regardless of season.
Things to see and do
Visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory to learn about monitoring and eruption history, then view the volcano from Jack Boy Hill or another authorised safe viewpoint. Plymouth and St George's Hill may be visited only with approved access and a certified guide. Boat tours show the buried town, volcanic deposits and newly shaped coastline from the sea.
Practical tips
Never cross the boundaries of the exclusion zone or rely on old maps or photographs. Follow MVO, DMCA and guide instructions, protect your eyes and airways from dust, and bring water and closed footwear. Clouds can completely hide the summit; do not look for a closer viewpoint on your own initiative.
Getting there and getting around
Montserrat is usually reached via Antigua on a short flight or, when operating, by ferry. From John A. Osborne Airport and Little Bay harbour, travel by taxi, rental car or organised tour to the observatory and northern viewpoints. A certified guide organises access to controlled southern zones.
Where to stay
Choose accommodation in the safe north of the island, for example near Little Bay, Brades, Cudjoe Head or Woodlands. These areas have the main services, restaurants and transport. Access farther south is restricted; overnight stays in the exclusion zone are not possible.
What to try
The best-known local dish is goat water, a rich spiced goat stew. Also try fish with fungi, saltfish, johnny cakes, cassava dishes, fresh seafood and drinks made with local rum.
