When to go

Temperature is an important factor for walking on the dunes: early morning is usually more comfortable than midday. Conditions and access may change with the weather.

Things to see and do

Explore the dunes, visit Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, photograph the desert landscape and visit Sesriem Canyon if you have enough time.

Practical tips

Carry enough water, protect yourself from the sun and check road and park conditions in advance. Use a suitable vehicle or transfer for deep-sand sections.

Getting there and getting around

The main access point is Sesriem, usually reached by car from Windhoek or other parts of Namibia. From there, the route continues to the dunes and Sossusvlei.

Where to stay

The Sesriem and Namib-Naukluft area has campsites, lodges and desert accommodation in different categories.

What to try

The region's lodges usually serve Namibian and international dishes, grilled meat and various regional side dishes.
