Royal Palaces of Abomey

Country: Benin Updated:

The Royal Palaces of Abomey are former residences of the rulers of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Earthen walls, successive courtyards and polychrome reliefs preserve memories of political, military, craft and ceremonial life from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

When to go

Visit the open courtyards in the morning and during a drier period where possible. Water and sun protection are needed in the heat, while heavy rain can make travel more difficult.

Things to see and do

Visit the historical museum and accessible palace areas with a local guide. Pay particular attention to the reliefs, the arrangement of courtyards and symbols of individual rulers.

Practical tips

Respect the site's royal and religious significance, and ask permission before photographing people or ceremonies. Follow current advice for Benin, do not continue into restricted northern border regions and avoid overland journeys at night.

Getting there and getting around

From Cotonou, travellers usually reach Abomey with a reliable driver, by car or on an organised tour. Start early, check the route and plan to travel only in daylight.

Where to stay

Stay in Abomey or neighbouring Bohicon to avoid a late return journey. Ask about electricity, water, security and transport before booking.

What to try

Try maize and cassava dishes, fish or chicken with tomato or peanut sauce, beans and seasonal fruit.
