Rock of Gibraltar
The Rock of Gibraltar is a limestone massif at the entrance to the Mediterranean, rising above the town, harbour and strait. Much of the Upper Rock belongs to the nature reserve, with caves, historic batteries, walking trails and Barbary macaques. In clear weather, viewpoints offer views of the coasts of Europe and Africa.
When to go
March to May and September to November are usually the most comfortable periods, with less heat and better trail conditions. Summer sun and climbs can be demanding; winter may bring rain and strong winds. On the day of your visit, check the status of trails, transport and individual attractions on the official website.
Things to see and do
Walk a section of the Mediterranean Steps or Nature Trails, and visit St Michael's Cave, the Skywalk, Windsor Suspension Bridge and a historic battery. Observe the macaques from a distance and do not try to touch them. The full route takes almost a day and requires a reserve ticket.
Practical tips
Do not feed the macaques or display food, and hold your bags firmly; the animals can snatch belongings and bite. Grippy shoes, water and sun protection are needed around cliffs and stone steps. Street crime is rare, but normal precautions for valuables are still sensible.
Getting there and getting around
Gibraltar can be reached by direct flight or on foot across the border from La Línea in Spain. Reach the reserve entrances by city bus, licensed Rock Tour, shuttle, taxi or on foot; ordinary vehicles from outside Gibraltar face restrictions on the Upper Rock. Check the cable car's status separately, as lengthy technical works are possible.
Where to stay
Central Gibraltar is practical for Main Street and the lower entrances; Ocean Village and Marina Bay suit restaurants and the waterfront. La Línea in Spain has a wider choice of accommodation, but consider identification documents and possible border waits.
What to try
Try calentita made with chickpea flour, panissa, rosto pasta, fresh fish, British classics, Spanish tapas and sweets with North African influences.
