Destination
Robben Island
Robben Island, off Cape Town, has been used at different times as a prison, an isolated hospital and a military base. The surviving buildings, including the maximum-security prison for political prisoners, are associated with apartheid, resistance, democracy and freedom.
When to go
Visits depend on wind, sea conditions and ferry operations. A sailing may be delayed or cancelled even in clear weather; keep a spare day available and check the operator's announcement immediately before departure.
Things to see and do
Take the official tour including the crossing, island tour and prison complex. Depending on the current programme, the route includes the quarry, historic buildings and places where political activists were held.
Practical tips
Treat the island as a place of remembrance, and do not use prison rooms as a backdrop for entertaining photographs. In Cape Town, use reliable transport to and from the terminal, avoid displaying valuables and do not walk through isolated areas after dark.
Getting there and getting around
Official trips depart by ferry from Cape Town. Arrive at the terminal early with your booking confirmation and identification, and check your return time and weather-related changes after the tour.
Where to stay
Central Cape Town districts or well-reviewed accommodation near the Waterfront with safe transport are suitable. Do not rely on long walks late at night.
What to try
Try Cape Malay curry, bobotie, fresh fish, seafood, samoosas, Malay sweets and South African barbecue dishes.
