Destination
Reykjavík
Reykjavík is Iceland's capital and its main urban centre. The city is known for modern architecture, geothermal baths, culture and easy access to nature experiences.
When to go
Summer offers very long days and is good for trips into the surrounding area. Winter days are shorter and the weather changeable, but the northern lights may be visible in suitable conditions.
Things to see and do
Visit Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa Concert Hall and the waterfront, walk through the centre and visit a geothermal swimming pool. The city is also a good base for excursions.
Practical tips
The weather can change quickly, so warm, waterproof and windproof clothing is important. Check road and weather conditions before driving outside the city.
Getting there and getting around
Most international flights arrive at Keflavík Airport. Buses and taxis connect the airport with Reykjavík. The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Where to stay
The centre is practical for restaurants, museums and walks. Neighbourhoods a little away from the main streets often offer quieter accommodation while remaining easy to reach.
What to try
Try Icelandic fish and lamb dishes, rye bread and skyr. Reykjavík also has many modern cafés and restaurants serving Nordic cuisine.
