When to go

Visit in the cooler months, in the morning or in the late afternoon. The open site heats up considerably during the day, so water and sun protection are important.

Things to see and do

Visit the museum, walk through accessible parts of the tell and explore the fort. Viewpoints reveal the coast, palm groves and the ancient city's connection to maritime trade.

Practical tips

Stay on marked paths and do not take archaeological fragments. Before travelling, check official advice about the regional situation, flights, airports and possible airspace restrictions.

Getting there and getting around

The site is only a few kilometres west of Manama. A taxi or car is the most practical option; check museum hours and return transport beforehand.

Where to stay

Manama has the widest selection of hotels and transport. Northern districts are an option for a quieter stay, but check journey times to the centre.

What to try

Try machboos with rice and spices, fish, muhammar, date dishes and Bahraini sweets.
