Piton de la Fournaise
Piton de la Fournaise is an active shield volcano in southeastern Réunion, rising to about 2,630 metres. Within the Enclos Fouqué caldera are young lava fields, cinder cones and the Dolomieu Crater. The volcano is continuously monitored; access to individual areas changes with volcanic activity and weather.
When to go
May to November is usually cooler and drier, but fog, rain and strong winds are possible in the mountains at any time. Start before sunrise, as visibility and temperatures are often better in the morning. Check the volcano observatory and prefecture announcements beforehand.
Things to see and do
Drive along the Route du Volcan to the Pas de Bellecombe-Jacob viewpoint. When access is open, descend to the Formica Léo cone and follow the marked trail towards Dolomieu Crater. The Cité du Volcan or a guided lava-tunnel tour make useful additions.
Practical tips
Never cross barriers or leave marked trails for eruption views. Carry at least two litres of water, a warm layer, sun and rain protection, a map and a charged phone. Lava is sharp, the ground is uneven and clouds can quickly make navigation difficult.
Getting there and getting around
The usual approach is by car or excursion transfer via La Plaine des Cafres and the Route du Volcan to the Pas de Bellecombe car park. The route is long, winding and rough in places; fill up beforehand. There is no scheduled public transport directly to the main trailhead.
Where to stay
La Plaine des Cafres and Bourg-Murat are practical for very early starts and the volcano museum. Saint-Pierre offers more restaurants and coastal facilities but is farther away. The east coast suits lava fields and tunnels.
What to try
Try cari with rice and lentils, rougail saucisse, samoussas, bouchons, Réunion vanilla, tropical fruit and local rum in moderation.
