Destination
Old San Juan
Old San Juan is the fortified colonial centre at the entrance to San Juan Bay. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, San Cristóbal, city walls, cobbled streets, squares and colourful houses shape its appearance. The sites are protected by the National Park Service and form part of a World Heritage site.
When to go
December to April is usually drier and somewhat cooler, but busier and more expensive. May to November is hotter and rainier; the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. The forts are best visited in the morning, when the sun is less intense and streets quieter.
Things to see and do
Explore El Morro and San Cristóbal, then Paseo del Morro and Paseo de la Princesa as far as the city gate. Visit squares, museums and the cathedral, and spend the evening in the colourful streets. Observe opening hours and possible restrictions after storms.
Practical tips
The forts have steep ramps, low passages and uneven, slippery surfaces. Wear sturdy shoes, keep away from wall edges, do not climb historic structures and protect yourself from the tropical sun. Watch valuables in busy areas.
Getting there and getting around
From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the usual journey to the old town is by licensed taxi, transfer or ride service; duration depends greatly on traffic. Walking is most convenient within the district because streets are narrow and parking scarce.
Where to stay
A boutique hotel or guesthouse in the old town is ideal for early walks and evening atmosphere. Larger modern hotels are in Condado and Miramar, requiring a short journey. In storm season, check generators and cancellation terms.
What to try
Try mofongo, arroz con gandules, roast pork lechón, bacalaítos, alcapurrias and tembleque coconut pudding.
