Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is an enormous inland delta in northern Botswana, known for seasonal water landscapes, channels, islands and large wildlife populations.
When to go
Water levels and wildlife-viewing conditions change greatly with the seasons. Peak flooding may occur considerably later than the local rainy season.
Things to see and do
Explore the delta with a licensed safari operator, take a mokoro trip in suitable conditions and watch wildlife.
Practical tips
Follow your guides' instructions and never approach wildlife independently. Choose licensed operators for water and safari activities.
Getting there and getting around
The region's main tourist centre is Maun. From there, remote lodges are reached by vehicle, boat or small aircraft.
Where to stay
Safari lodges and camps in different categories are available in and around the delta, many in remote natural areas.
What to try
At safari lodges, try Botswanan dishes such as seswaa, pap, vegetable side dishes and meat dishes.
