When to go

Spring and autumn are particularly popular for blossom and autumn foliage. The main sights can become very crowded at weekends.

Things to see and do

Visit Tōdai-ji Temple, walk through Nara Park and explore Kasuga Taisha, traditional gardens and Naramachi.

Practical tips

Do not feed animals unsuitable food and observe park rules. Visit popular temples in the morning where possible.

Getting there and getting around

Nara has good rail connections to Kyoto and Osaka and is therefore often visited on a day trip.

Where to stay

What to try

Try kakinoha-zushi, Miwa somen, local sweets and traditional Japanese dishes.
