Mount Pelée
Mount Pelée is an active volcano about 1,397 metres high in northern Martinique and the island's highest point. Its 1902 eruption destroyed Saint-Pierre and became a key event in volcanology; the Peléan eruption type is named after it. Today, the massif's humid forests, volcanic landforms and rare endemic species form part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
When to go
The drier period from December to April is usually chosen for the ascent. Even then, the summit can quickly cloud over, wind can strengthen and muddy sections become slippery after rain. Start early in the morning; in the rainy season, check trail status and visibility particularly carefully.
Things to see and do
The most popular trail begins at the Aileron car park above Morne-Rouge and leads to shelters, the caldera and, in suitable conditions, the highest point, Le Chinois. Complement the hike with Saint-Pierre and museums and ruins relating to the 1902 disaster. If not planning a full ascent, choose shorter woodland trails and viewpoints at the mountain's foot.
Practical tips
Check the weather and official trail status immediately before starting. Sturdy shoes, rain protection, enough water, food and a warm layer are required, as summit conditions differ greatly from the coast. Do not walk alone in bad weather, share your route and turn back in thunderstorms, strong wind or dense fog.
Getting there and getting around
The main trails are reached via Morne-Rouge in northern Martinique; the Aileron car park is above the town. The drive from Fort-de-France takes about an hour or longer depending on traffic and weather. Buses are limited for early starts, so a rental car, transfer or guided tour is more convenient.
Where to stay
Morne-Rouge suits an early start and cooler mountain nights. Saint-Pierre combines volcano, history and coast, while Fort-de-France offers the largest hotel selection but requires an earlier departure.
What to try
In northern Martinique, try accras, colombo, smoked boucané, seafood and dishes with breadfruit and cassava. Rhum agricole and planteur punch should be enjoyed only in moderation and after the hike.
