Destination
Monaco
Monaco is well explored one district at a time: the old town on the Rock, Port Hercule and the streets of Monte Carlo show different sides of the principality. Sea views, gardens and a museum fit into a varied day.
When to go
Spring and autumn suit walks; take the events calendar into account. In summer, longer climbs are more pleasant in the morning or towards evening.
Things to see and do
Walk through Monaco-Ville to the square in front of the Prince's Palace and Saint-Martin Gardens. Add the Oceanographic Museum and Port Hercule to the circuit.
Practical tips
There are significant changes in elevation between districts. Use a town map showing lifts and escalators: a short distance on the map is not automatically an easy walk.
Getting there and getting around
Monaco–Monte-Carlo station connects the principality with towns on the Côte d'Azur. For arrival by air, Nice Airport followed by a transfer is an option.
Where to stay
La Condamine is suitable for access to the harbour, and Monte Carlo for the area around the casino. Before booking, also check the elevation difference between the station and accommodation.
What to try
Try the filled pastries barbagiuan and sweet fougasse. La Condamine offers an introduction to the principality's everyday cuisine.
