Destination
Mogadishu
As of 7 October 2026, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to this destination. This page introduces its culture and history; we do not currently recommend a tourist trip. Mogadishu is a historic port on the Indian Ocean. Old coastal neighbourhoods and the lighthouse represent the city's centuries-old heritage.
When to go
The season does not change the current advice to avoid travel.
Things to see and do
UNESCO materials on rebuilding cultural heritage convey the history of the lighthouse and old town from a distance.
Practical tips
Images of a quiet coast do not reflect current risk; new official advice is decisive.
Getting there and getting around
No tourist route through the airport or land borders is proposed here.
Where to stay
The existence of a hotel is not evidence that an ordinary independent trip would be reasonable.
What to try
Spiced rice, flatbread and tea are part of Somali culinary traditions, which can also be explored outside the country.
