Country: Lesotho Updated:

When to go

After the summer rains, approximately January to April, the waterfall usually carries more water, but thunderstorms and slippery paths require caution. May to August is more often dry and clear, but nights are very cold and frost, snow and ice are possible in the highlands.

Things to see and do

View the waterfall from the upper viewpoints, walk along the gorge rim with a local guide or take a pony trek from Semonkong. Abseiling should be undertaken only with a professional operator, equipment in excellent condition and suitable insurance.

Practical tips

There are no continuous railings at the drop; keep away from the edge, avoid wet rocks and do not descend into the gorge without a guide. The weather changes quickly, so bring warm, waterproof clothing, water, an offline map and evacuation insurance.

Getting there and getting around

Semonkong lies about 115 to 130 kilometres from Maseru and is reached along the mountain road via Roma. Book a reliable transfer or four-wheel-drive vehicle, allow several hours, check the weather and avoid driving after dark.

Where to stay

A lodge, guesthouse or equipped campsite in Semonkong is convenient, with guides and excursions available to arrange. Ask about heating, hot water, meals, road conditions and mobile reception.

What to try

Try papa maize porridge, stewed moroho greens, the sour sorghum dish motoho, trout and meat grilled over an open fire.
