When to go

The cooler months are particularly good for archaeological sightseeing. Daytime temperatures can be extremely high in summer.

Things to see and do

Visit the temples of Karnak and Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and other monuments on the Nile's west bank.

Practical tips

Start outdoor sightseeing early in the morning and bring plenty of water. Plan transport to the west bank in advance.

Getting there and getting around

Luxor has an international airport and rail connections to Cairo and other cities in the Nile Valley. Nile cruises also stop here.

Where to stay

The east bank is convenient for the centre, restaurants and temples. The west bank offers a quieter atmosphere near archaeological sites.

What to try

Try Egyptian mezze, koshari, pigeon dishes, vegetable dishes and traditional desserts.
