Los Haitises National Park
Los Haitises is a large national park in the Dominican Republic with limestone mogotes, mangrove channels, bays, islets and humid tropical forest. Caves preserve Taíno petroglyphs and pictographs; numerous seabirds and forest birds breed on the cayos and in the mangroves.
When to go
The park is visited throughout the year, but boat trips depend on wind, waves and rainfall. Drier periods are usually better for excursions and paths; the route must still be confirmed shortly before the date. Early morning offers softer light and good birdwatching conditions.
Things to see and do
Take an official boat trip among mogotes and mangroves, watch birds, paddle only in authorised channels and visit open caves with a guide. Do not touch rock art, take shells or enter closed areas.
Practical tips
Use a licensed operator, wear a life jacket, protect electronics from water and bring insect repellent. According to the environment ministry, La Línea Cave was temporarily closed on 23 June 2026 because of the condition of its walkway; confirm which caves and routes are currently open in advance.
Getting there and getting around
Popular boat routes depart from Samaná and Sabana de la Mar; the exact landing point depends on the programme and sea conditions. The first stage is by road, followed by boat. Do not pay for unofficial landings, and confirm the return time before departure.
Where to stay
There are no ordinary hotels inside the protected area. Samaná, Sabana de la Mar and other places on the peninsula are suitable bases. Choose licensed accommodation and check whether the excursion includes a transfer to the landing point or requires an early independent arrival.
What to try
Coastal towns serve fish, rice, beans, plantains, yuca, coconut dishes and seasonal fruit. Order seafood at reliable establishments and do not buy products from protected animals. Bring water aboard in a reusable bottle.
