León Cathedral
León Cathedral was built from 1747 into the early 19th century and combines Late Baroque with Neoclassicism. Its broad, light-filled structure, low towers, vaults, religious artworks and relationship with the historic centre led to its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
When to go
Walking tours of the historic centre are easier to plan in the usually drier months from November to April. Because of the heat, come in the morning or later in the afternoon and check roof access, service times and temporary closures.
Things to see and do
Visit the bright nave, chapels and artworks, find the tomb of the poet Rubén Darío and go up to the white roof terraces when access is officially open. Afterwards, a walk around the main square and through León's colonial streets is worthwhile.
Practical tips
The cathedral is an active religious place; dress respectfully, do not disturb services and follow photography rules. Avoid demonstrations and all political activity, use authorised taxis and do not plan overland journeys after dark.
Getting there and getting around
León is usually reached by road from Managua or Granada by intercity bus, pre-booked transfer or car. Clarify the drop-off point, as large luggage and traffic in the historic centre may make the final stage difficult.
Where to stay
The historic centre is convenient for walking, but choose a hotel with a round-the-clock reception, secure document storage and organised transport. Clarify air conditioning and reserve water supplies before booking.
What to try
Try vigorón, quesillo, nacatamal, gallo pinto, fried plantains and cocoa drinks.
