Destination
Kyiv
As of 7 October 2026, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to this destination. This page introduces its culture and history; we do not currently recommend a tourist trip. Kyiv on the Dnipro preserves important cultural heritage, including the UNESCO sites of Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Monastery of the Caves. Russia's war against Ukraine and air attacks determine the current risks.
When to go
The season does not make an ordinary tourist trip safe.
Things to see and do
Explore the history of the cathedral, monastery ensembles and city from a distance through museum and international materials.
Practical tips
The advice against all travel applies to Kyiv; different categories apply to certain western regions. Follow local warnings if you are already in the country.
Getting there and getting around
Ukrainian airspace is closed to civilian flights; ordinary arrival by air is not available. We also do not recommend tourist overland routes.
Where to stay
Do not book tourist accommodation solely on the basis of cultural descriptions; access to shelters is crucial for people already there.
What to try
Borshch, varenyky and pastries offer an introduction to parts of Ukrainian cuisine without travelling.
