Kuldīga

Country: Latvia Updated:

Kuldīga is a well-preserved historic town in western Latvia that developed into an important centre of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. Its old street plan, timber and brick buildings and riverside landscape reflect the exchange of craft traditions around the Baltic.

When to go

Late spring, summer and early autumn are suitable for walks by the river and in the old town. In winter, allow for short days, snow and ice; paving and wooden boardwalks may be slippery after rain.

Things to see and do

Walk through the old town, see traditional houses, the brick bridge over the Venta, riverside paths and the wide Ventas Rumba waterfall. Visit courtyards and workshops where they are open to guests.

Practical tips

The historic centre remains inhabited. Do not enter private courtyards without an invitation and treat the old buildings with care. Check road conditions in winter and observe barriers by the river; do not step onto slippery rocks.

Getting there and getting around

Kuldīga is reached from Riga by intercity bus or car. There is no direct rail connection, so check the return journey and bus arrival time in advance.

Where to stay

Small hotels and guesthouses in the old town allow evening and early-morning walks. Book early for popular summer weekends and events.

What to try

Try rye bread, smoked fish, grey peas, potato dishes, Courland sklandrausis and regional dairy products.
