Destination
Kobe
Kobe is a port city between the Rokkō mountains and Osaka Bay. It combines a modern waterfront, historic districts, panoramic views and one of Japan's best-known culinary traditions.
When to go
Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for walks. Summer is hot and humid; winter is usually cool but comparatively mild.
Things to see and do
Explore Harborland and Meriken Park, go up Mount Rokkō, visit the historic Kitano district, walk through Nankinmachi and take a trip to Arima Onsen.
Practical tips
Central Kobe is easily explored on foot and by public transport. If visiting Rokkō and Arima Onsen on the same day, check connections beforehand.
Getting there and getting around
Kobe lies near Osaka and has excellent rail connections. The Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kobe Station.
Where to stay
Sannomiya and Motomachi are particularly convenient. Waterfront hotels offer views of the bay, while Arima Onsen has a more traditional atmosphere.
What to try
The city is best known for Kobe beef. Food in the Nankinmachi Chinatown district, seafood and local sweets are also worth trying.
